by Josh McCrohon @JoshMcCrohon57The UFC has been an MMA federation since 1993 and is owned by the UFC president, Dana White. Dana White has been the UFC president since 2001 and shows no signs of slowing down! The federation itself is the largest MMA company in the world but what happens if you’ve never watched it? I’m Josh and I’m going to teach you everything you need to know about the promotion. The RulesThere are many rules, not just in UFC but MMA in general. Some of the rules include a ban on head butting, groin attacks, hair pulling, biting and spitting. In addition to this, other physical attacks such as strikes to the spine, strikes to the back of the head area, kneeing the head of a grounded opponent and even stomping on a grounded opponent are looked upon with disdain. In fact, The rules I’ve mentioned are ones you’d expect as they’re pretty standard and reasonable. In fact, all of these will be cause for a disqualification if they happen. So how do you win a fight? There’s many ways to win fights: TKO and KO. The difference is that KO stands for knockout and that happens when a fighter is knocked out cold and is unable to continue. TKO however is a little bit more complex as this could happen when a fighter doesn’t defend themselves and basically gets battered, but could also happen when a fighter gets a deep cut and needs medical attention as soon as possible or when a fighter is too tired to compete from the previous round. TKO stands for technical knockout. You can also win a fight via submission, where a fighter taps out due to being locked in a hold. Finally, you can win via a decision. This is decided by judges after a fight goes its full length. There’s different types of decisions. We’ll start off with unanimous decision which means all 3 judges vote for the same fighter. Next is majority decision, which means 2 judges vote for one fighter but the other judge thinks the fight was a draw. The fighter with the 2 votes would win due to majority decision. A split decision is another way the fight can be decided. Split decision means that 2 judges vote for one fighter and the other judge decides that the opponent is the winner, but the odd judge out is outnumbered so therefore the fighter with 2 votes would win. Disqualification is another way but this ones quite uncommon. RoundsA relatively short entry this, UFC fights are usually 3 round bouts. The 3 rounds are 5 minutes each. However, Main Event or Championship bouts are 5 rounds. Weight ClassesWomen’s Strawweight: This division doesn’t have a minimum weight limit but does have a maximum of 115 pounds. The title is currently held by Rose Namajunas who won the title by defeating Joanna Jędrzejczyk by TKO on November 4th. Women’s Flyweight: This division has a minimum of 115 and the maximum is 125 pounds. The title is currently held by Nicco Montano who won the inaugural championship on December 1st. This is the newest division as this was just introduced just a few days ago. Women’s Bantamweight: This division has a minimum of 125 pounds and a maximum of 135. The championship is held by Amanda Nunes which she won last July by beating Meisha Tate. Women’s Featherweight: This division has a minimum weight limit of 135 and a maximum limit of 145 pounds. The championship currently belongs to the terrifying Cris Cyborg since her beating of former champion Tonya Evinger last July. Flyweight: This divison has a minimum weight of 115 pounds and goes up to 125. This title is held by Demetrious Johnson who won the title in 2012. And to make matters worse, he’s been the only flyweight champion in history, holding it for a staggering 1,091 days! If somehow that’s not impressive enough for you, he also has the most successful title defenses in UFC history with 11. He truly is a Mighty Mouse. Bantamweight: This division has a minimum weight of 125 pounds and goes up to a maximum of 135. The current champion is TJ Dillashaw who defeated Cody Garbrandt at UFC 217 after Garbrandt had held it for 308 days! Featherweight: This division has a minimum weight of 135 and goes up to 145 pounds. The current champion is Max Holloway when he beat Jose Aldo at UFC 212, before successfully defending it against the same opponent at UFC 218. Lightweight: From 145 to 155 pounds, the title belongs to Conor McGregor. He won the title last year but hasn’t yet defended it. It is unknown at this time when or even if his first defense will take place. Welterweight: This division goes from 155 to 170 pounds. Tyron Woodley is the current champion. He won the belt in July 2016. Middleweight: This division goes from 170 to 185 pounds. This title recently changed hands as George St. Pierre made a return after a 50 PPV absence, beating Michael Bisping by submission to capture the gold, which is an amazing feat! Light Heavyweight: This class ranges from 185 to 205 pounds. The title currently belongs to Daniel Cormier. He was beaten by Jon Jones this year, however it was later revealed that Jones was on steroids which gave him an unfair advantage. Therefore he was suspended and the title went back to Cormier who will defend it in January against Volkan Oezdemir. Heavyweight: This title has a weight limit of 205 to 265 pounds. The title currently belongs to Stipe Miocic who won the belt last May. EventsUFC has monthly PPV events. They also have a “weekly” show called “UFC: Fight Night”. The show airs on a Saturday on BT Sport! If you don’t watch UFC, I recommend you watch PPV events first and after a while you can start watching fight nights, it may be easier to familiarise yourself with the fighters that way! Obviously, there’s a lot more than what I’ve mentioned here, but I’ve only talked about the big stuff. The next UFC event is UFC Fight Night: Swanson Vs. Ortega. That is this Saturday!
